The last two months since the executive order by the U.S. government have been full of suspense and dilemma for users who own or wish to buy Android devices made by Huawei and Honor. While Huawei has reportedly been working on a homegrown alternative to Android, the development of EMUI 10 based on Android Q appears to be going on with full swing too. Back in June, we saw the first preview of Android Q running on the Huawei P30 Pro and even saw Huawei’s optimism about rolling out Android Q update, in spite of the hurdles by the U.S. government, for at least 15 Huawei devices. For Honor, however, there has been no such assurances yet except for the Honor 20/20 Pro. But as per the company’s Twitter handle, Android Q is already under consideration for the Honor 8X and the Honor 10.

The Honor 10 was launched last summer with EMUI 8.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and eventually updated to EMUI 9.0 based on Android 9 Pie last year itself. The Honor 8X ran a slightly refined UI out-of-the-box with EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo when it arrived in fall last year but got an update to Android Pie only in March this year.
Thank you for showing your interest for Android Q. We would like to inform you that our software team has already evaluated and confirmed the compatibility of Android Q upgrade with Honor 8X.

Now, as per the official Twitter account of Honor India, the development for EMUI 10 based on Android Q is already under development for both – the Honor 10 and the Honor 8X. On the other hand, we don’t see any assurance about Android Q update for other popular devices including the Honor Play, Honor V20/View20, etc.

Notably, the company did announce that most of these devices will receive EMUI 9.1 (or Magic 2.1) update which brings subtle UI and performance improvements over the earlier Android Pie build. Honor India did not share any information about a tentative date for the update in either of the case so we’ll have to wait for another announcement in this respect.
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would like to inform you that our software team has confirmed the compatibility of device with EMUI 9.0/Android Pie and expected to be released the final version of EMUI 9.0/Android Pie tentatively by end of July 2019.

In the meantime, the Honor 7X from 2017 may finally start receiving Android Pie update by the end of this month. The company started recruiting beta testers in India in May after showing signs of hesitation but there has been no information about the update since then.
If you’re excited about the update, you may also take a look at our hands-on of EMUI 10 based on Android Q. This build runs on the P30 Pro but it can be expected to look and work similarly.

Update: EMUI 10 Beta available for the Honor 8X
Honor has opened up EMUI 10 beta testing for the Honor 8X, specifically for the 4GB + 64GB variant.
Users who are interested in participating in the Beta need to download the Beta Tool (Friendly User Test), install it on their device, and join the Honor 8X beta project within the app. This will allow OTA updates for the Beta to be delivered on the device. There are limited spots within the project, so you can try your luck and check if they are still accepting applications for this beta test. Nonetheless, this does signal that the stable update can land soon on the Honor 8X.
